This is one of the first batch in a series called 'Philosophy at Work', designed to show contemporary philosophy being fruitfully applied to practical problems. Mr. Atkinson's first concern is to examine arguments which are commonly used in defence of, and in opposition to, such things as preand extra-marital intercourse, contraception, artificial insemination, divorce, homosexuality. He unravels confusions, exposes contradictions and in general, tries to separate the good arguments from the bad. He does not attempt to make up our minds for us, but to carry out an expert survey of the field, so that we can take up our own positions with a fuller knowledge of their strengths and weaknesses, and of the implications involved. This is typical of the approach of the modern philosopher, and it is high time we had a series
